A Response to the ChalkUp21 Trail - Jamie Jenkinson and his students
ARTISTS’ WALK // On Sunday 26th October 2017, a handful of RCA Visual Communication students (Zhongfu Su, Emma Harry, Tae Ho Kim and Nick Shih-Hsien Hsu) were taken along a section of CHALKUP21 by Jamie Jenkinson (whose research walk is documented here), in which they chose to walk from Deal through to Dover. The students and Jenkinson made responses to the walk through drawings, photographs and videos as they went. Below is a selection of the material they made, beginning in a wet and windy Deal, into glorious sunshine as they approached the lights of Dover.
Final statement from Nick Shih-Hsien Hsu: “To me, it was definitely an unforgettable tour which explored the beauty of the British landscape by walking from Deal to Dover. The journey started from the sound of the waves crashing against the pebble beach, then headed for the splendid white cliff in the distance. While I was walking on the path of the white cliff, the smell of the grass and the sound of wind soon reminded me about my memory of going mountain climbing this summer with friends. It seemed like standing at a transmitting point, once the trigger was pulled, the flashback soon transported me back to the depth of my previous beautifully imprinted memories, causing a specific sense of ‘Place Lag’. I appreciated this amazing walking tour and decided to discover more sensational celebrations based on the relationship among landscapes, people and memories. Many thanks to South Eastern for their help with this activity.”
South Eastern supported the students with free return tickets from London.
